PROMPT
Throughout this course, we have identified and discussed several challenges in society. Your task is to choose one challenge our society faces today. Through research, you will inform the class about this challenge in a formal 3-4 minute speech. The cause of this problem MUST be connected to something we have read/discussed this semester.
INSTRUCTIONS
FIRST, determine a challenge that interests you. Every challenge has multiple perspectives (for example, some people believe that global warming is an issue society faces today, while others feel that it is not), so begin by brainstorming the different perspectives that exist with regards to this challenge. *Reminder: A perspective is an argument.

SECOND, begin conducting your research. You need to find at least THREE SOURCES; consider the following as you begin this process:
- Each source needs to be credible (search reputable websites and databases, NOT Wikipedia!).
- Each source should highlight or include a different perspective, or lens, associated with the challenge so that you can explore and understand as many angles of the challenge as possible.
- One of the sources must be connected to what we have already discussed in class, including the book(s), short stories, articles, visual texts, etc. This source will help you explain what you believe to be the real cause of the problem. This cause will involve an aspect of human nature that our literature discussed.
- defines the challenge and the perspectives on which you have focused
- verbally cites the sources you have utilized and comments on the credibility of each source
- identifies the CAUSE of the problem (you do not need to provide a solution to the problem)
- expresses your opinion on the topic and the articles
- analyzes and answers the “so what?” (in other words, explains why this challenge is necessary for society to address)
Points will be given based on the following criteria:
- Quality of your spoken presentation
- Completeness of the information given during the presentation
- Quality of the visual aids or other materials used in the presentation
- Enthusiasm and interest generated by your presentation
- See rubric for other speaking requirements
